I fell in love with the magic of girls music at a very young age. When all my friends rented the latest music , I took out all the old MGM musicals from our local video store and watched
them over and over. There’s “On the town” and “Anchors away” and the unforgettable Gene Kelly in “Singing in the rain. The funniest scene ever is the “Triplets” scene from “The Band Wagon” (you can watch a video clip on
youtube.com) , but certainly the most magnificent dance routine from this movie is the “Girl Hunt Ballet” , with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Did you know that this scene was the inspiration behind the Michael
Jackson , “Smooth Criminal” music video?
My favorite girls music of all times must be the Andrew Lloyd Weber girls music , “Joseph”. I saw a South African version of this popular musical at the State Theatre in
Pretoria in the 80’s. The show was produced by Richard Loring. Our very own Mr. Entertainment , Ian von Memmerty , played the part of the narrator. The following day I rushed to the music store to buy the CD with Jason Donovan
singing the lead. I can still remember the whole musical , from the words “… some folks dream of the wonders they’ll do , before there time on this planet is through…” right to the end with “… any dream will do.”
